Three left in Chatham Cup
Rab Smith

There is a royal chance that two Dunedin sides can progress further in the Chatham Cup during  ties to be played this weekend in Dunedin.

Christchurch side Coastal Spirit, pic right, is sure to try and spoil the party on Sunday when it plays Caversham at the Caledonian ground at the early kick-off time of 1 pm, in case extra time is needed.

Coastal Spirit is a surprise packet which was only formed four years ago as an amalgamation of Rangers and New Brighton, and had to earn promotion upwards to gain a place in the Mainland Premier.

Coach Korouch Monsef was formerly in charge of Canterbury United, and has guided his new club upwards, into the highly competitive Mainland Premier.

Spirit’s present Cup run was achieved by travelling to beat Nelson side Richmond Athletic in a free flowing eight goal thriller, winning 5-3 to progress into the last 16 of the Cup.

Monsef has built on a strong defence and an attack that includes top scorers Ash Wellbourne, Gareth Turnbull and Ryan Stewart.

Caversham staggered a bit last week, losing 1-nil to Roslyn-Wakari, albeit with 10 men for most of the match, but with Footballsouth Premier hopes fading, coach Richard Murray ( left ) will concentrate even more on the Cup.

In top form, Caversham can play champagne football, with pace, precision passing and finishing power that earned 49 FPL goals in 12 matches this season.

Yet this is Cup football, with all the thrills of sudden death play, and for Dunedin spectators there will also be the novelty of seeing a top Christchurch side and comparing quite different styles of play that made the old Southern League so interesting for scholars of the game.

The loss of striker Tom Jackson after being red carded last week will not help Caversham, but coach Murray has reasonable depth in his squad and red supporters gave a special cheer to Tim Horner when had a short run against Roslyn, and clearly playing a fit Horner would improve Caversham’s chances.

Today ( Saturday ) at Ellis Park, the Chatham Cup fur should fly at 2 pm, as Roslyn has home advantage against Dunedin Technical which holds a clear seven point lead over the FPL pack.

Technical is unbeaten in Cup and FPL matches – except for an ominous 2-1 defeat by Roslyn, back in May when  Brad Johnstone and Fraser Cameron scored, and Matt Joy replied for Technical.

Coach Mike Fridge has gathered a large strong squad that slammed in 18 goals in two matches against Queenstown, nine against Green Island,  six against Mosgiel, five against Northern and so on.

Having multi Golden Boot winner Aaron Burgess up front tends to give Technical two goals of a start, and the Invercargill hitman has already notched 23 FPL goals so far this season.

Coach Colin Thom’s Roslyn has been more erratic, dropping eight points through two losses and two draws in the FPL.

Thom’s squad is like his attack. Its paper thin and in some matches they have had only a scant squad of 11 players available. However Roslyn has taken some impressive FPL scalps, Technical 2-1, Caversham 1-1  and 1-nil.

The team can occasionally produce an effective blend of aggression and passing skills. Keeper Peter Evans , defenders Tim Mather, James Watson, midfielder Mike Cunningham and Sam Mepham can inspire their team mates to unexpected heights.

And since Mather and the German from Kopenick in Berlin Max Pollok leave soon, this might be Roslyn’s last chance to make a concerted statement.

The FPL still goes on in Chatham shadow. University and Mosgiel  could match the quality of Cup-ties in a 12.45 pm FPL match at the Caledonian ground and at the freshly trimmed Gardens Northern faces a Green Island side still flushed with its first win of the season last week over Queenstown.

That club will also have a point to prove in Central Otago when Spirit FC comes visiting, since last time out the result was a battling 2-2 draw.
