Referee News Oct. 2011
by Chris Boyd
I want to congratulate our two newest inductees into the New Zealand Football "metal badge" club. Both these individuals have been awarded their Level 4 badges recently:
Hamish Philip (badge number 2229)
Edward Cook (badge number 2228)
......
This is a great achievement for 2011 and it brings to 23 the number of registered referees within Footballsouth who have a New Zealand badge. The honour of holding the earliest badge in Footballsouth goes to Ron Paterson with badge number 489 issued in 1967, followed by Norman Wiseman - badge number 617 issued in 1974 - and Norman celebrated 50 years of refereeing this year. The next badge number on the list is me at badge number 1039 issued in 1991 and I suppose I still amble around the field and along the lines so am technically "active".
There are 23 New Zealand metal badge holders registered in Footballsouth, with all bar 8 of them being in the 2000+ number range. Other than Norman and myself the other senior brigade members are:
Terry McNamara 1118
Shane Luzak 1145
Allan Martin 1151
Brent Best 1153
Dave Langley 1212
Jeff Clamp 1238
In the years before the 1990s there was a lengthy pathway to attaining a New Zealand badge which involved several years of apprenticeship through the Divisions, but fast tracking means the number of badges issued is greater now (for the first 70 years from 1921 there were only some 1010 badges issued, and for the next 20 years there have been over 1200 badges issued).
For the record there are many former referees out there who are still around and are the proud holders of New Zealand badges gained in Otago - some (not all of them - sorry if I have missed people out and others who attained their badges outside Otago) have badges as follows with the year they were awarded:
Blair Conner 464 (1966)
Norman Cotton 540 (1970)
Mike Kelly 733 (1980)
Bob McSkimming 770 (1982)
Noel Burgess 825 (1984)
Ivan Walters 826 (1984)
John Evans 895 (1986)
Maurice Howell 923 (1987)
Mark Ratten 984 (1989)
Philip Lyall 1009 (1990)
Barry van Gorp 1010 (1990)
John Barratt 1022 (1990)
On a very sad note, one of my contemporaries, who received his badge in the year after me (badge number 1043 in 1992), Bruce Scoullar passed away this month.
And, let's not forget the other achievements of referees in Footballsouth this year. We had a record number of individuals pass their field tests under the new system for achieiving a Level 2 accreditation. These individuals are two footsteps away from their New Zealand badges are we should recognise their achievement:
Philip Beale (Dunedin),
Michael Bell (Dunedin),
Tim Best (Dunedin)
Aaron Calder (Southland),
Nobby Clark (Southland),
John Doody (Southland)
Ian Edwards (Southland),
Gregor Finn (Southland),
Abdul Munaf Khan (Southland)
Bernie McKone (Southland),
Geoff Rodden (Dunedin),
Greg Ward (Southland)
Jackie Watts (Southland)
Jackie, Tim and Aaron were rewarded with offers of places on the referee teams for the National Women's League (Aaron unfortunately had work commitments elsewhere) and will be making their first appearance this weekend as Footballsouth compete against Mainland.
April 2011
The Grading list for 2011 is as follows ( top 10 in each category shown):
Referees:
1. Jeff Clamp
2. Allan Martin
3. Gary McNicol
4. Peter Faithful
5. Edward Cook
6. Richard Roberts
7. Hamish Philip
8. Jack Cowie
9. Dean Seager
10. Kevin Smith
Assistant Referees:
1.= Brent Best, Kenny Evans, Edward Cook
4.= Gary McNicol, Becky Hart
7. Jack Cowie
8. Allan Martin
9. Hamish Philip
10. Tony Mole
The marks were very, very close in both categories (with only a fraction of a mark separating most). So, if your name is not on a list, it does not mean that you did not have a successful year - marks for all referees ranged from 5.95 through to 7.70 (remember the maximum is 10) and for all assistant referees from 6.98 through to 8.00.
Referee Development Academies Congratulations to Edward Cook, Dean Seager and Stephen Markham on representing Footballsouth at the Referee Development Academies in Napier this year in conjunction with the NZ Secondary School Boys Premier tournament.
These academies focus on development of decision-making, management and communication, preparation, including physical preparation, and give officials a chance to be seen outside of Footballsouth and to meet other referees.
On the positive side Edward Cook again showed his high level of aerobic and anaerobic fitness, maturity, calmness and hard work. Dean Seager excelled in fitness, enthusiasm and in foul recognition, whilst Stephen Markham was also up there in terms of fitness, foul recognition and varied use of the whistle.
National Leagues These kick off in October, with the first of the ASB Premiership home games for Otago United being on 6th November against Waitakere. Come along and support our guys (the refs of course!).
I am still waiting to see the official final draw for the Youth League but I think this kicks off on 5th November for Otago United, with three home games in total to early December, and the National Women's Youth League I think starts on October 22nd for the Footballsouth women.
